Finding the Story Between the Panels
Working on the script and layouts of my comic has been a lot like learning to speak a new language-one made of panels, pauses, and tiny moments that carry big emotions. I went in thinking scripting would be the “writing part” and layouts would be the “drawing part,” but very quickly I realized they breathe into each other. The script changes the moment I sketch a rough panel, and a doodled layout suddenly gives birth to new dialogue I never planned. Some days I’m a director, deciding camera angles and pacing. Other days I’m an actor, hearing the characters argue in my head and trying to capture their voices on the page. I’ve learned that a single panel can change the entire mood of a scene-move it a little to the left, make it taller, add more silence-and suddenly the joke lands better or the mystery feels heavier. Most importantly, I’m learning patience. A comic isn’t built in a straight line; it’s a conversation between the writer me and the artist me. And every page, even the frustrating ones, teaches me a little more about how stories want to be told. And I’ll continue this for awhile until it’s finally completed. See you next time. Thank you!
